Today I went on a field trip with my school to Allensworth State Park in California, for the annual rededication event. This is the first & only Black founded town in the state. It felt really good to see what my ancestors built & how they paved the way! I never heard of this place until recently & it was a great experience, if only I could go back in time ~

A great place for stargazing. We camp here often. Clean washrooms with flushing toilets. Great location for riding your bike or strolling around the park.

Come learn about a (mostly) forgotten piece of early American history -- I had never heard of this town or it's people before visiting. We were just looking for a spot to overnight on our way north but spent most of the next day exploring the restored pioneer town with its self-guided tour posts. My wife is disabled and cannot walk much, this afforded us the ability to drive through and learn about it together. Don't miss the visitors center, the little unassuming 'trailer' is a mini museum and the information in the entry way will give you a background to set the stage for your tour of the town. Bathrooms and showers were all tiled, very clean, and remarkably Hot! Abundant wildlife for such a small area, four kinds of owls, tons of ground squirrels, a chart in the visitors center will show you what to watch for. We both wanted more time here, will stay again on our way back home.

Such a great part of history. I wish I planned better so I could actually go inside some of the homes. I usually just stop as we're passing through from SoCal to home in NorCal.

Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park is a small historic park nestled among residential areas, and it's not very convenient to reach. Inside the park, you’ll find static displays of various pioneer-era buildings. We visited while driving from Fresno back to LA. The interiors of these buildings are not open, so you can only view them through the windows. Unless you’re planning to camp, there’s not much of particular interest to see here. The park could benefit from improvements, especially to its public restrooms, which are incredibly hard to find. It would be great if the park offered interactive elements, such as reenactments, historical dramas, or even experiences where visitors could try on period clothing or use vintage laundry tools.

This place is a must-visit! My mom brought my brother and me here as kids to connect with our ancestors’ history. It’s the first and only town in California founded, funded, and governed by Black people. While I was a bit let down that the Juneteenth Jubilee didn’t match the scale of previous ones I remembered, I’m eager to help promote it. My hope is that next year’s event will be even grander and attract more attendees to celebrate and preserve our rich history.
