What is it like to send your child to this HBCU? Does it mean to send your child to one of the oldest institutions that supposedly educated some of our community's most prominent members and have so many issues ? Does it mean that you have to fend for yourself to actually locate information and they are uncaring? Does it mean that it is difficult to get cooperation from admin from this fine historic university? Personally we have received nothing less than continuous disappointment from FAMU! The experience of dealing with FAMU has been the most unorganized, dysfunctional school experiences that I have ever encountered and the staff is very disrespectful!
I understand as to why so many are apprehensive about sending their kid to this school. Our experience dealing with admin entailed, any time you asked a question relating to records, classes, fees, tuition or at least anything remotely important, they act like they are doing you a favor. Also, when answering any questions for weeks, they are seemingly annoyed that you are bothering them. It has been extremely stressful from the beginning and it is very difficult to get actual correct answers. I can't tell you how many emails, calls, and transfers to wrong extensions, we had to deal with in order to get their mistakes or ( frequently wrong information) corrected. It should not be this stressful for students to get registered for classes or for them to even acknowledge your existence. They have repeatedly put the incorrect information on my kid's account and we went through a lot of trouble getting anything corrected. Do not get me started on the issues with financial aid. The financial aid problems seems like a running theme at this school

During the orientation, it was not a total welcoming environment and again some of the staff were unprofessional, disorganized, clueless and very rude. Her last school was a PWI an had several hundred students during orientation and it was a positive, very seamless experience and they have over 60K students! We did notice throughout orientation that the few non-ethnic students were given exemplary service and special attention at this HBCU. We thought that maybe it was an off day for some staff and that it may have contributed to the number of people in attendance and could have been overwhelmed.
Our experience has been to request to repeatedly speak to an department head or email in order to get anything remotely corrected and then that same department head will look you up on LinkedIn (very weird, as if we can't see who viewed your profile). Even via email, their responses are condescending to the student.

If you want to send your kid to a school that has very poor customer service (rude to students) as a part of their school's culture, and has an unwelcoming, disorganized environment this is regrettably the school to attend. You would think after being established for over 100 years they would have gotten their act together. I totally regret insisting that my kid go here and it is strictly based on the many negative encounters from different admin staff. If a lot of money had not already been spent with excessive fees and we initially knew what the administration was like, we would have already switched schools.

The only pros are the students are great and she was able to get housing quickly. I wish I had viewed the other factual negative reviews on the app prior to her applying. We will see how the first semester goes with her classes and unfortunately my kid is already looking at other schools. I hope that her experience improves after she gets there. I unfortunately insisted that she transfer from a very large university so she could have the HBCU experience and we never went through any of this stress and this has given both of us enormous anxiety. My sincere advice is to watch your student's accounts closely, save any documents you give them because they will lose something, save emails and get very involved while your child attends. If HBCU's want support from their community, they need to get their act together!

Quite possibly the worst law school in the nation.

The faculty members are embezzling thousands of dollars (if not millions) from the student body. There are no funds whatsoever for student organizations on campus, there are no career planning services offered, ZERO scholarships offered to second or third year students with positive academic records, No trial team or moot court team funding, the computer software being run on campus was actually "windows 97" until 2016 when second rate windows 2010 computers were donated from the main campus.

Despite a budget line item for student travel no funds are allocated to the students to attend conferences, mentoring events, or even for trial competitions. The faculty members are in a quagmire of disagreements, students are often pitted against a professor or told not to speak to certain other professors. There are ZERO academic advisors, after the first year students are basically left to fend for themselves.

The latest bar results saw a 36% passage rate and only then did the lawschool finally release free bar prep materials to students. these materials were two years old btw.

The entire college needs to be closed immediately and the marching band shenanigans should be shipped back to Tallahassee. The school has truly wasted an opportunity to produce Black attorneys.

Very well maintained building and super friendly staff. FAMU law seems to have it together, their Florida Bar passage rate is way up.
